GCS Enrollment

• How old must my child be to enroll in preschool?
  • To enroll in the GCS preschool program, the student must be 4 years of age by November 30 of the enrollment year.
     
• What is the cost of tuition?
  • A $100.00 non-refundable deposit is required to secure enrollment in the preschool program, which goes towards the first month's tuition payment.

    *A 5% pre-payment discount will be offered for full-year tuition payments received on or before October 1, 2024.

  • DHS payments are accepted. Parents/Guardians are responsible for the balance of tuition not covered by DHS.
     
• Is transportation provided?
  • Transportation is not provided by Gaylord Community Schools.

GCS Preschool Suggested Supplies

• Original Birth Certificate
• Complete immunizations or immunization waiver.  Students will not be enrolled until immunizations are completed or a wavier is on file. Please contact your primary care provider or the Health Department (1-800-432-4121) to schedule immunizations or to discuss waiver information.

• How old must my child be to enter Kindergarten?
  • To enroll in kindergarten, the student must be 5 years of age by September 1 of the enrollment year. 
  • According to Michigan law, if a child residing in the Gaylord Community School District is not five years of age on September 1, but will be five years of age no later than December 1, the parent or legal guardian of that child may enroll the child in kindergarten by completing a Kindergarten Waiver Form.
  • A school district that receives a Kindergarten Waiver Form may make a recommendation to the parent or legal guardian as to whether the child is ready or not to enroll in kindergarten due to the child’s age or other factors. Regardless of the district recommendation, the parent or legal guardian retains the sole discretion to determine whether or not to enroll the child in kindergarten if the student is five years of age no later than December 1.
     
• What elementary building will my child attend?
  • Gaylord Community Schools has two elementary buildings: North Ohio Elementary and South Maple Elementary. Your child's building assignment will be based on the following criteria:

    • Enrollment numbers

    • Residence zone

    • Same elementary school building as sibling(s)

• Original Birth Certificate
• Proof of Residency: Documentation must have parent/guardian name and address indicating residency within the district. (Ex. driver's license, lease/rental agreement, utility bill, property tax statement, voter's registration, mortgage document, certification from work, etc.)
• Complete immunizations or immunization waiver. (CDC Immunization Recommendation). Students will not be enrolled until immunizations are completed or a wavier is on file. Please contact your primary care provider or the Health Department (1-800-432-4121) to schedule immunizations or to discuss waiver information.
• Power of attorney or guardianship paperwork: if student does not live with parent. 
• Latest IEP or 504 Plan: if student receives special education services.
• Kindergarten students: Evidence of hearing and vision screening. New requirement: dental assessment. 
  • Call the Health Department at 1-800-432-4121 or your child's physician/dentist for more information.

• Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, a student registering for Kindergarten (or first grade if applicable), must undergo a dental assessment per Public Act 316 of 2023 by the Michigan Legislature. 
• A dental assessment must occur within six months of starting school.
• Dental assessments can be conducted by:
  • A dentist or dental hygienist
  • A qualified professional working through the Health Department
  • A pre-enrollment event conducted by Gaylord Community Schools
• Dental assessments are scheduled several times a year at GCS through the Health Department, free of charge. Information will be provided during registration.
